Professional –
Jimmie Johnson, NASCAR – The El Cajon native had an exciting month of racing, coming in top 10 in three of his five races on the NASCAR Cup Series. His highest finish of the month was, a second place finish, was also his most dramatic race so far this season finishing .117 seconds behind the winner. With all this success Johnson ended the month of February in fifth overall position on the NASCAR leaderboard.
Max Comtois, San Diego Gulls – The young phenom had a month to remember scoring four game winning goals. For his dramatic contributions he was also recognized as the AHL rookie of of the month.
Amateur –
Tyrell Roberts, UC San Diego Men’s Basketball – He averaged 21.7 points per game as the fourth-ranked Tritons went 7-0 in the month of February. Roberts shot an impressive 49.5% overall, 49.1% from beyond the three-point arc. Roberts is now the record holder for UC San Diego three-point field goals in a season, with 95 by the end of February.
Akayla Hackson, Cal State San Marcos Womens Basketball – The junior led the Cougars to a 7-0 record in February, averaging 17.4 points per game. She led the team in made 3-pointers (16), steals (15) and blocked shots (6). She tallied a career-high 31 points to guide the Cougars to an 85-69 victory at Cal State East Bay on Feb. 22.
Joel Gamerov, University of San Diego Men’s Tennis – Remained undefeated in singles with four wins – including over a ranked opponent from Oklahoma on February 9 – to help USD capture three victories in the month of February. After being named WCC Singles Player of the Week on February 4, he along with his doubles partner August Holmgren were named WCC Doubles Players of the Week on February 25.
Casey Schmitt, SDSU Baseball – The Aztec closer tallied four saves in the first month of season for SDSU, who finished February 7 – 4. Schmitt earned Mountain West pitcher of the week honors for the week of the 24th after closing out wins against Iowa and Nebraska on back to back nights.
High School –
AJ Burgin, San Diego Boys Basketball
A 31-point, 18-rebound, 8-assist game by the 6-foot-3 junior helped lead the Cavers past City Conference rival University City for the San Diego Section Division II crown 87-79.
Melanie Clamp, Mar Vista Girls Water Polo
The senior led the Mariners to a 10-0 record in the month that included San Diego Section championship and first ever Southern California Regional State title in school history. She had 20 goals and 15 assists during the historic month for the program.
Jurian Dixon, San Ysidro Boys Basketball – The San Ysidro freshman caught fire to close out the season averaging 25 points and five rebounds per game in the month of February. The Cougars capped off a perfect 7-0 February by winning the CIF San Diego Section Division 3 championship, the first basketball championship in school history for San Ysidro, Dixon led all scorers in the game with 34 points.
Breya Cunningham, LJ Country Day Girls Basketball
The 6-foot-4 freshman post player helped lead the Torreys to the section Open Division title with 15 points and 7 rebounds in a 54-37 triumph over Cathedral Catholic in the final.
Charlie Kosakoff, Torrey Pines Boys Soccer
Making a remarkable recovery from a broken femur, the sophomore scored a 3-goal hat trick to lead the Falcons past Del Norte 4-1 for the section Open Division championship.
Audrey Covington, Cathedral Catholic Girls Soccer
Scoring the first and last goals in the Open Division final, the senior led the No. 1 Dons to the section title in a 3-1 victory over Carlsbad in a battle between the top two seeds.
