The San Diego Sports Association is proud to announce our November Stars of the Month for the Professional and Collegiate levels. Helix high school alum and current NFL quarterback Alex Smith, San Diego State basketball player Jordan Schakel and Rancho Bernardo high school graduate and current TCU women’s soccer player Marz Akins were all selected as stars of the month for their outstanding play.
Pro:
Former Helix High quarterback Alex Smith continued his comeback from a near-career-ending leg injury. He started four games for the Washington Football team, throwing for more than 1,000 yards and three TD in the month. Smith led the team to a pair of wins, including a Thanksgiving Day prime-time victory against the Dallas Cowboys
College:
Jordan Schakel (SDSU Basketball) scored a team-high 15 points in the win vs #22 UCLA and 20 points against UC Irvine.
Marz Akins (Rancho Bernardo HS), a defender on the Texas Christian women’s soccer team, was named Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Year as the Horned Frogs went 8-0-1, beating West Virginia 1-0 to capture the conference championship in this pandemic-shortened season. Akins started eight games and played every minute of every game she played, on a defense that allowed just three goals.
