Amby Schindler was an elusive, hard-running ball carrier at the University of Southern California (1936-37, 1939) who earned All-America honors and led his team to a 14-0 victory over Tennessee in the 1940 Rose Bowl game. He was named Player of the Game for that performance in Pasadena and also in the 1940 College All-Star Game against the Green Bay Packers. At San Diego High School, he was twice an All-Southern California quarterback and captain of the track team. He coached football and track at El Camino College in Torrance, California from 1947 to 1958. Schindler was inducted into the Breitbard Hall of Fame in 1973.
