San Diego native Alex Smith made an emotional and seemingly historic return to the NFL this weekend after suffering a gruesome injury almost two years ago. His journey back to the NFL included multiple hospital stays, 17 surgeries and countless hours of rehabbing his leg which now is held together with titanium rods and screws. Doctors at the time of his injury were on record saying it was unlikely that Smith would ever return to action in an NFL game, but on Sunday – 694 days after suffering his injury – Smith returned to action for Washington’s NFL team. He completed 9 passes for 37 yards.
“We were at a place where we weren’t certain he’d be able to walk and live,” his wife Elizabeth said to media after the game, “and to see him work so hard and accomplish so much — when this guy puts his mind to something, he just doesn’t stop. I think that was something really special.”
The former Helix Highlander has two more years on his contract with the Washington team, so it would seem that there is more football still to come for the veteran Smith.
