As most of San Diego has grown used to working from home as the new normal, Matt Savant and the Gulls can’t wait to get the entire city to come back to their offices.
“There is a legit passion from the community that you can feel when you step inside the arena,” said Savant, the Gulls’ President of Business Operations.
It’s been more than four months since Savant has been inside the Gulls’ offices, but that hasn’t stopped him and his team from working to find ways to help safely reunite the community with the team they love.
Every aspect of the sports business from marketing and broadcasting to player and fan safety is being looked at in new ways. Savant and his staff have been hard at work trying to come up with new ideas to connect and communicate with their fans. It has been a team effort from the entire Gulls staff to try and make sure no idea or possibility is overlooked.
“We have a really pleasant young staff and I have enjoyed brainstorming a ton of creative and new ideas the past few months with them,” commented Savant.
While the American Hockey League is still determining when a return to action will take place, the Gulls are hard at work making sure the fans will feel safe and comfortable to return to games when they return to the ice.
While the current fluid nature of hockeys return means some of his ideas may be left on the drawing board, Savant and his team will have a something ready for whatever the season ends up looking like. For the fans that might mean streaming more games on Facebook or how to safely seat however many fans might be allowed to attend a game or maybe even reimagining the communal viewing experience in socially distanced settings outdoors.
No matter what the format is when hockey returns to San Diego, one thing is clear: the Gulls will be more than ready to drop the puck on an exciting season.
“We want our fans to know that we are taking this 100 percent to heart and will have every aspect of their safety in mind from the time they arrive at the arena to when the final buzzer sounds after a Gulls win,” said an excited Savant.
