San Diego State football received some national notoriety with the announcement that Aztecs safety Tariq Thompson and defensive end Cameron Thomas were both named to the preseason watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award. The Bednarik Award is given each year to the top defensive player in college football. SDSU was one of just 21 schools to have multiple players highlighted on the list.
Last season the pair played major roles in SDSU’s defense that helped lead to a 10-3 record, the program’s fourth double-digit win campaign over the last five years. Statistically, San Diego State led the Mountain West in 2019 in scoring defense (12.7, 2nd in FBS), rush defense (75.4, 2nd in FBS) and total defense (287.8, 5th in FBS). The pair both graduated from San Diego-area high schools: Thompson from St. Augustine (’17) and Thomas from Carlsbad (’18).
