The popular video game MLB The Show announced today that Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. will be the athlete featured on the cover of this year’s edition of the game. The picture of Tatis ironically flipping his bat comes from game 2 of the 2020 NL wild card series vs the Cardinals when he hit a three-run home run in the 6th inning to start the Padres comeback win.
This adds another to a growing list of accolades that Tatis has already garnered in his young career and would seem to cement Tatis’ status as one of the faces of the new generation of baseball. This also serves as a sort of milestone for the local sports community with Tatis being only the second athlete from a San Diego team to be featured on the cover of a sports video game, the other being Tony Gwynn on the cover of the 1997 edition of Triple Play baseball.
Reaction across social media was an outpouring of enthusiasm for the choice and seemed to reflect the growing number of people who are fans of the signature swagger and charisma that Tatis is becoming know for playing with. The game will be released on April 20th and will feature a number of national advertising campaign with Tatis to go along with it.
